How to take care of your home

Many common household problems can be solved with a few simple checks. On this page, you will find instructions for basic home care and maintenance.
If these instructions do not solve the problem or you notice a fault that needs to be repaired, submit a service request as soon as possible.

As a tenant, you are responsible for taking proper care of your apartment. You must also report any faults or damage that the landlord is responsible for repairing without delay.

The apartment is too cold or too hot

  • The room temperature should be 21–22°C in the living area, measured away from the outside wall. If the temperature is too low or too high, submit a service request.
  • It is normal for a radiator to feel cold from time to time. This may happen when the outdoor temperature is above 12°C or when a thermostatic radiator valve controls the temperature.
  • If the apartment is too warm, turn the radiator thermostat down. Do not try to lower the temperature by keeping the windows open.
  • Do not place any furniture, curtains or other items in front of a radiator or thermostat.
  • If only the top of the radiator feels warm, the radiator valve is working correctly.

Have you noticed a water leak?

  • If you notice a water leak or suspect that a pipe is leaking, close the tap’s shut-off valves if possible when the water is coming from a water pipe. Submit a service request immediately. The sooner a leak is reported, the more likely it is that serious damage can be avoided.

The drain is running slowly

  • A slow drain is often caused by dirt collected in the water trap. Open the trap, remove the collected material and clean the parts with a mild detergent solution. If the problem continues after cleaning, submit a service request.

There is a draught by the windows or the air feels stuffy

If the air in your apartment feels stuffy or you notice a draught near the windows, first check that the ventilation is working correctly.

  • Buildings Z–Ö have mechanical exhaust ventilation. Check that the fresh-air vents in the windows are open and not blocked by dust or dirt. If necessary, clean the vents with a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth.
  • Buildings A–Y have mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation. Regularly remove dust from the outside surfaces of the ventilation valves using a cloth or vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not cover or close ventilation valves. They are an important part of the apartment’s ventilation system.
  • If the problem continues after these checks, submit a service request.

Kitchen care and cleaning

Small maintenance tasks in the kitchen can help prevent many common problems. Keeping appliances, ventilation and drains clean helps them work properly and last longer.

Cooker hood and ventilation

  • Wash the cooker hood grease filter and exhaust air valves with a mild detergent solution at least once a month.
  • Do not adjust or turn the inner adjustment section of an exhaust air valve.
  • Remove dust and dirt from ventilation valves at least twice a year.
  • Always keep the valves open and do not cover them.

Dishwasher

  • Regularly check the hose connections for leaks.
  • Clean the filter inside the dishwasher according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Fridge and freezer

  • Pull the fridge away from the wall and vacuum behind it at least once a year.
  • Check that the fridge, freezer and cold-storage appliance are working according to their operating instructions.
  • Defrost the freezer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Kitchen Sink

  • Clean the sink strainer regularly to help keep the drain in good condition.

Bathroom and toilet care

The bathroom is one of the dampest areas in the home. Regular cleaning and proper ventilation help keep it in good condition.

Surfaces and floors

  • Wipe the bathroom ceiling and regularly wash the floors and walls, as dirt and detergent residue can easily collect on them.
  • Dry the floor after showering with a floor squeegee so that moisture can evaporate more quickly.

Floor drain and washbasin

  • Clean the floor drain and its inner parts at least once a month.
  • Clean the washbasin strainer regularly to help keep the drain working properly.

Washing machine

  • Regularly check the hose connections for leaks.
  • Clean the washing machine’s lint filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Ventilation

  • Remove dust from ventilation valves at least twice a year. If the valve cover can be removed, wash it with a mild detergent solution.
  • Always keep ventilation valves open and do not cover them.
  • Make sure that air can circulate properly in wet areas.
  • Check ventilation units according to their operating instructions. Do not change the adjustment position of a ventilation valve.

The internet connection or TV channels are not working

  • If television channels are missing or the internet connection is not working, first try tuning the TV channels again. Also check the settings and connections of your devices.
  • If the problem continues, contact Telia customer service.

There is no electricity in the apartment or a power socket

  • If there is no electricity in the entire apartment or in an individual power socket, first check the apartment’s fuses, circuit breakers and residual current device. Switch any tripped circuit breaker back to the ON position.
  • If there is no visible problem with the fuses or circuit breakers, check whether the power cut also affects other apartments or the building’s shared areas. For example, check whether the courtyard lights and lights in neighbouring apartments are working.
  • Information about current power cuts and faults is available from Turku Energia.

Balcony

Regular cleaning helps keep your balcony a pleasant place to spend time and prevents unnecessary problems.

  • Regularly remove rubbish, leaves and excess water from the balcony.
  • Do not throw anything from the balcony, including cigarette ends, rubbish, snow or other items.
  • Please consider your neighbours so that everyone can enjoy using their balcony.
