Fire Safety at Home<\/h2>\n

Fire safety is an important part of safe living. Every resident can help prevent fires and make sure that people know what to do in an emergency. At Jyrkk\u00e4l\u00e4, we want to promote a safe living environment by providing clear instructions for fire safety and emergencies.<\/p>\n

Smoke alarms save lives<\/h3>\n

A smoke alarm is one of the most important safety devices in your home. Every home must have at least one smoke alarm for every 60 square metres on each floor or level. The building owner is responsible for providing and maintaining the smoke alarms while residents should test the alarms regularly, preferably once a month and after a long absence.<\/p>\n

If a smoke alarm does not work properly or you notice another problem, report it immediately.<\/p>\n

What to do in case of fire?<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Save yourself and anyone in immediate danger. Warn other people.<\/li>\n
  2. Put out the fire if it is small and there’s no heavy smoke and you can do so safely. Do not put yourself in danger!<\/li>\n
  3. Call 112 from a safe place, preferably from outside.<\/li>\n
  4. Close doors and windows behind you to slow down the spread of fire and smoke. Switch off ventilation if you can do so safely.<\/li>\n
  5. Guide the fire brigade to the correct location. Keep the access route clear and tell the firefighters if anyone may still be in danger.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The emergency number is 112<\/h3>\n

    When calling the emergency number:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Make the call yourself if you can<\/li>\n
    • Explain clearly what has happened<\/li>\n
    • Give the exact address and municipality<\/li>\n
    • Answer the questions you are asked<\/li>\n
    • Follow the instructions you receive<\/li>\n
    • Do not end the call until you are told to do so<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Call 112 even if you have managed to put out the fire.<\/strong> A fire may start again or continue to smoulder inside the building structures. The rescue services will check that the situation is safe and assess any damage.<\/p>\n

      What to do if there is heavy smoke<\/h3>\n
        \n
      • Stay low and crawl if you need to move through a smoky room: there is usually less smoke close to the floor.<\/li>\n
      • Do not use the lift.<\/strong> Use the stairs if the route is clear and safe, don’t enter a smoke-filled stairwell.<\/li>\n
      • Close doors leading to rooms where there is fire or smoke.<\/li>\n
      • If you cannot leave safely, go to a balcony or window and wait for the firefighters.<\/li>\n
      • If smoke is entering the apartment, block gaps around the door with wet towels or other damp cloths.<\/li>\n
      • Make sure rescuers can find you. Wave a piece of clothing, shout or call 112 and explain your exact location.<\/li>\n
      • Do not open a door that feels hot, there might be a fire on the other side. Use another safe exit route if one is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Once you have left a burning building, never go back inside to collect your belongings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Preventing fires at home<\/h3>\n

        Many fires at home can be prevented through careful everyday habits.<\/p>\n

        Never leave cooking unattended. Cooking fires are among the most common causes of fires in homes. Keep electrical appliances in good condition and avoid overloading extension leads and power sockets. Stop using damaged appliances and cables immediately.<\/p>\n

        Always supervise candles, outdoor candles and other open flames. Keep them a safe distance from curtains, furniture and other flammable materials. Put out candles when leaving the room and check that no open flames are burning before going to sleep.<\/p>\n

        Keep all escape routes always clear, including the hallway, balcony and the door leading to the stairwell. Being able to leave quickly can be critical in an emergency.<\/p>\n
